Kentucky Community Urged to Stay Alert Amid Manhunt for 'Armed and Dangerous' Person of Interest in Interstate Shooting

A manhunt is underway for a suspect accused of shooting into nine vehicles on an interstate south of Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday.

The attack left five people seriously injured, forced the closure of the interstate for several hours, and has left a rural community on high alert. Authorities are actively searching for the shooter, as the community remains on edge.

Shots were fired into vehicles traveling on both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 75 around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, leaving five people injured, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. All victims are in stable condition, the department's spokesperson, Gilbert Acciardo, told CNN.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and remain alert as the search continues for Joseph A. Couch, identified as a person of interest in the shooting. Couch is described as a White man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing around 154 pounds. He is considered "armed and dangerous," according to law enforcement.

London Mayor Randall Weddle urged the public to stay cautious, writing on Facebook, “Please remain vigilant and call 911 if you see the individual in question.” The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office also warned the public, "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPROACH."

The search, coordinated by the sheriff's office, resumed Sunday morning, with multiple law enforcement agencies and a drone equipped with infrared heat-sensing technology assisting in the operation.
