On Saturday, Sept. 7, Nicole Kidman, 57, revealed the heartbreaking news of her mother Janelle Ann Kidman's passing. Kidman had flown to the Venice Film Festival but left early after receiving the tragic news.

During what would have been Kidman’s acceptance speech for Best Actress for her role in Babygirl, director Halina Reijn, 48, read a statement on Kidman’s behalf. In the message, Kidman shared, "I had just arrived in Venice, only to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed."

"I'm in shock and need to be with my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, guided me, and made me who I am. I am deeply grateful to say her name to all of you through Halina," the director continued, reading Nicole Kidman's heartfelt statement. "The collision of life and art is devastating, and my heart is broken."

After sharing Kidman's words with the audience in Venice, Reijn added, "We love you, Nicole."

A representative for Kidman confirmed Janelle Ann Kidman's passing to PEOPLE, stating, "The family is heartbroken and requests privacy during this difficult time."
