James Earl Jones Passes Away at 93: Beloved 'Field of Dreams' Actor, Iconic Voice of Darth Vader, and Broadway Legend

James Earl Jones, the legendary actor best known for voicing Darth Vader in Star Wars, starring in Field of Dreams, and appearing in numerous other films and Broadway productions, has passed away at the age of 93. Jones, an EGOT winner, died this morning at his home in Dutchess County, NY. His representatives at Independent Artist Group confirmed the news to Deadline.

Widely considered one of the greatest stage and screen actors of all time, James Earl Jones is among the select few entertainers to achieve EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), though his Academy Award was honorary. His impressive accolades include two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy, a spoken-word Grammy in 1977, and three Tony Awards.

During his illustrious 60-year career, James Earl Jones amassed nearly 200 screen credits, beginning with TV guest roles in the early 1960s and a notable appearance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. He is perhaps best known for his iconic voice role as the menacing Darth Vader in George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy: Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). Jones later reprised the role in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019), as well as the TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: Rebels.

Movie fans will forever remember Darth Vader's chilling, iconic lines delivered by James Earl Jones, including “When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master,” “I find your lack of faith disturbing,” and the unforgettable revelation, “No, I am your father.”
