Tyreek Hill Detained for Driving Violation Before Dolphins Game, Later Released
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police on Sunday near Hard Rock Stadium due to a driving violation but was released before the Dolphins' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hill, who played in the game, scored an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter and celebrated by reenacting his earlier detainment. He mimicked being handcuffed while fellow receiver Jaylen Waddle followed behind.
A video posted on social media showed Hill face down on the ground as officers placed him in handcuffs. Sources told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that Hill was stopped for speeding and engaged in a verbal altercation with police, leading to his brief detainment. Hill was cited for reckless driving.
The incident occurred about a block from the stadium, and several of Hill’s teammates reportedly stopped to offer support.
Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels confirmed the detainment and ordered an immediate review of the incident, including body camera footage.
Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the situation "heartbreaking" and "completely unnecessary," stating he was concerned about potential mistreatment of Hill. He thanked the Dolphins for their role in deescalating the situation.
The NFL has been in contact with the Dolphins but has not commented further on the matter.
