Tyreek Hill 'still processing' pregame detainment by police

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Several Miami Dolphins players, including star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, were detained by Miami-Dade Police officers ahead of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill was stopped for allegedly speeding on his way to Hard Rock Stadium, about three hours before kickoff.

According to sources, Hill was placed in handcuffs following a "verbal altercation" that occurred during the traffic stop. He was cited for reckless driving and later released after a few minutes. The incident, filmed by nearby fans, quickly went viral on social media.

After the game, Hill expressed confusion over how the situation escalated. "I'm still trying to figure out what happened," Hill said. "But I want to use this platform to ask, 'What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?' Worst-case scenario, you know? Everyone has bad apples, but I want to turn this into a positive, both for myself and the Miami-Dade community."

Hill also reflected on the broader implications of the encounter. "It's tough. I don't want to make this about race, but sometimes it feels like it is," he said. "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, who knows what might have happened? My uncle always told me to stay calm, keep my hands on the steering wheel, and listen, and that's exactly what I did."

Hill said he has "no idea" why officers decided to place him in handcuffs, emphasizing that he was respectful and did not use profanity during the encounter.

Dolphins offensive lineman Terron Armstead noted that Hill was "pretty upset, but ready to play" when he entered the locker room before the game. Hill went on to deliver a standout performance, racking up a game-high 130 receiving yards, including an 80-yard touchdown — the longest of his career. After scoring, Hill celebrated by mimicking his detainment, placing his hands behind his back while teammate Jaylen Waddle playfully "arrested" him.

Videos from the incident showed Hill lying on the ground, handcuffed, surrounded by four officers.

Several teammates, including Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith, stopped to offer support and help calm the situation. This led to Campbell also being detained. "Disobeying a direct order," Campbell explained when asked why he was detained. "The officer said I was too close to the scene and mentioned something about not moving my car in time. I wasn’t arrested, but they cited me for being detained before releasing me.
