Bihar Witnesses Robust Turnout in First Phase of Assembly Elections

PATNA, Bihar – October 28, 2020 – The democratic spirit was palpable across Bihar today as the first phase of the crucial Assembly Elections concluded with a remarkably high voter turnout. Initial reports indicate a strong participation from the electorate, making the Bihar polls a significant national news story and setting an energetic tone for the remainder of the election process.

Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and strict safety protocols in place, voters queued up in large numbers from early morning, eager to cast their ballots. The Election Commission of India had implemented extensive measures, including mandatory mask-wearing, thermal screening at polling booths, sanitization facilities, and maintaining social distancing, to ensure a safe voting environment.

The first phase covered 71 out of the 243 assembly constituencies, spread across 16 districts. These constituencies included areas considered crucial battlegrounds, with several prominent political figures and their fates hanging in the balance. Political analysts are closely watching the turnout figures, as they often serve as an indicator of public sentiment and can influence the dynamics of subsequent phases.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar, H.R. Srinivasa, addressing a press conference in Patna, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the elections and the commendable adherence to safety guidelines by the voters. He lauded the efforts of polling personnel, security forces, and health workers who worked tirelessly to facilitate the electoral process.

All major political parties, including the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising JD(U) and BJP, and the opposition Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) led by the RJD, Congress, and Left parties, had campaigned vigorously in these constituencies. The high turnout suggests a deeply engaged electorate keen on expressing its mandate on issues ranging from development, employment, corruption, and the government's handling of the pandemic.

As the ballot boxes are sealed and secured, attention now shifts to the remaining phases of the Bihar Assembly Elections, scheduled for November 3rd and November 7th. The counting of votes for all phases will take place on November 10th. The robust participation in this initial phase underscores the importance of these elections for the political landscape of Bihar and the nation.
